Hardly we dwell our attention to optimize images for search traffic due to the myth that image search could fetch only half a percent of Google’s traffic, but, in fact, the image could draw you even more than just half a percent traffic.

Much earlier, the idea of image optimization wasn’t in fashion in enhancing the search traffic, but now images are playing a great role in search results and you actually see the image on the search listing page. So due to this, it has become prominent to actually work upon the optimization of images for search engines. Having learnt much about image optimization and its implications on the search results, time now to learn about those key parameters of image optimization that would certainly pave the way to have better search engine rankings.

Alt Tags

Alt tag

The search engine is not programmed to actually read the image as it is; we need to incorporate something to let the search engine know about the image. This is where the Alt tags come into picture which are used to describe the image and assist the search engine to read the image.
Suppose you have the image of the Pyramids of Giza of the earlier century, then the Alt tag should read something like this:
Alt= “Pyramids of Giza in 1878”
The full source code of the image tag will be something like this:
”Pyramids
There are three points which are required to be considered while creating good Alt tags and these are:-
The tag should target the keyword.
The image should be described with a good description, and
The tag should be short and exact.

File Name

Never use a generic name to describe the image, try to use a descriptive name for the image that can help in describing the image. This is essential because there are billions of images spread across the Internet and you definitely wouldn’t want your image to go unsearched; for this, it is necessary to describe the image file name to be more descriptive so that the image can go up in the search results. If you would use a generic name, then the image would end up having very low rankings in the search engine results.

Exchangeable Image File Format

Exchangeable Image File Format

The EXIF or exchangeable image file format helps the developer to add more meta tags to the image file. In fact, the meta tags will be embedded in the image itself and they will remain with the image. This tag is even more detailed than Alt tag and it embeds information such as:-

When the image was taken, then flash was ON or OFF.
Which camera was used to click the image.
Date and time of the image when it was clicked.
Height and width of the image.

These were just a few of those details which the EXIF tag carries, in fact, it gives you more space to embed even more information about the image which you can opt according to your preference. You can also include the website name along with the description of the image to the EXIF.

Now this tag is used to tag the image of your choice to your website or business which you think is highly required for your business or you think the image will help in reaching to the target audience. The image will turn out in the search results along with your website or business when someone searches for your business.

Geographic Location

Geographic Location

Another important learning when you are targeting the ranking of your business in the local search results. Moreover, when you are working upon the localized keywords, then make sure you name the image by considering the localized keyword. It means that when you are running a business in any specific location, then make sure you name the image file according to the geographic location. Similarly the Alt tag should also be updated according to the localized keyword.
